The Triathlon Club of San Diego offers an extensive swim program to help everyone from beginners to seasoned athletes. The core of our program are weekly coached workouts in the pool. These workouts are split into two groups. The first group concentrates on stroke technique and mechanics. This is the best place to start if you are new to swimming or don't feel very comfortable in the water. This group uses drills and individual instruction to help you learn the basic mechanics of swimming. It's also a good place to go to brush up on your stroke. Everyone can benefit from a second set of eyes evaluating their stroke. The second pool group swims a traditional drill set workout. Speed and distance vary, but the usual workout is 2000-2500 meters.
The pool workouts take place at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) in University City. The pool is an olympic size pool that set up as yard or meters (25 yard lengths vs. 50 meter lengths) depending on the day. It's an outdoor pool with a bathroom that can be used for changing. This is a top notch facility. The cost is $5 per swim session, however, a multiple swim card can be purchased at a discount. We do not have access to the JCC locker rooms and pool entrance is at the back gate to the pool (not through the front of the JCC). Swims are Monday and Wednesday at 7:30pm.
After becoming comfortable in the pool you can work your way into open water. Mission Bay offers a great way to get used to open water swimming without having to deal with heavy waves or deep swells. Mission Bay, and at times Glorietta Bay on Coronado, are where we offer our beginning open water swim programs. The distances vary, but are usually 1000 meters - enough to get used to swimming without lane lines and sighting buoys. Wetsuits are recommended so you can simulate a real race swim. This is a great way to get over your fear of open water. Don't worry, you're never far from shore and our coaches are always nearby to offer words of encouragement. This is not the place to learn how to swim, however, it's a great place to work on your swimming if you don't like pools. Since the water temperature drops in the winter, this program occurs in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. This workout usually takes place on Thursday nights at 6:00pm.
Open water swimming can be a lot of fun. Especially here in San Diego. We are fortunate to have many opportunities to swim in the ocean. Depending on the day of the week, we have organized swims at La Jolla Shores, La Jolla Cover, and Fletcher Cover in Solana Beach. There are often other swims at Tamarack beach in Carlsbad as well. The Cover swims happen Friday night at 6:00pm and Sunday morning. Once a month we have a Pot Luck on the grass above The Cove. Monday night at 6:00pm we meet at La Jolla Shores. The distances in these swims varies from 1/2 mile to 2 miles depending on your strength. This is a great place to get used to the ocean while still feeling like you're in a protected bay. Since the Cove is a protected ecological park you'll also likely see a lot of marine life on your swim as well. The ocean swims are held in Spring, Summer, and Fall. During the winter many people continue to get together and swim, although not quite as frequently.
